CIS #3 Chatbot Chat – two teams, two bots, one goal

This CIS event on Tuesday 18th of August at 1pm (AEST), will revisit two presentations from the 2025 conference. Our ALL peers from The University of Queensland and Flinders University will each share their experience. Drawing on different approaches and contexts, each team has developed customised AI agents to provide academic language, literacy and study skills support while complementing existing learning support services. Each presenter will discuss their own design processes, insights, and lessons learned, with time for Q & A at the end. Join the conversation to explore how two teams pursued the same goal and to learn from the similarities, differences, challenges and successes of their experience.

Presentation 1:

Don’t call it a chatbot: Reimagining AI’s role in academic language support

Andrew Sankey — UQ Business School, The University of Queensland

Andrew Sankey is an Embedded Language Support Officer in the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Queensland. He works in conjunction with academics and Learning Designers to integrate academic language and skills support into course material. His areas of interest include supporting language learners in oral assessments and the use of chatbots and AI to assist learning.

Sean Mitchell — UQ Business School, The University of Queensland

Sean Mitchell is a learning designer at UQ Business School, helping staff cut through the AI panic with practical, student-focused innovation. He’s part of the School’s strategic response to generative tools, designing inclusive learning experiences and creative classroom interventions that make emerging tech actually work for teaching and learning.

 

Presentation 2:

Not Just a Chatbot: Rethinking Intelligent Agents for Academic Support

Madison Richter— Flinders University

Madison Richter is a PhD Candidate at Flinders University, researching learning and disability support. Additionally, she works as an academic, developing AI academic support agents. Along with her team, she received the 2024 Vice Chancellor’s Award for Innovation in Teaching for a college-wide pilot on AI student support tools.
