Assessment and development of students' English language proficiency: What is your institution doing?

Symposium held at the University of Sydney 25 May, 2012

The development of students’ English language proficiency in the course of their university studies has been an area of ongoing concern not only within the university sector but also in government and the media. With the publication of the Good Practice Principles for English language proficiency for international students in Australian universities, (Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR, 2009), a number of universities have sought to improve their approach to English language development and provision of English language support. However, it is not clear to what extent the issue has been approached systemically throughout the sector, what organisational strategies universities have in place to implement the Good Practice Principles, and what measures universities use to ascertain whether they have been successful in implementing them.

To try to address these questions, we would like to invite you to a symposium on assessment and development of students’ English language proficiency to be held at the University of Sydney on Friday 25 May 2012. This AALL-sponsored symposium aims to bring together people who are already involved in the development of institutional policies in this area or the implementation of these policies in terms of PELAs (Post Entry English Language Assessment) and the development of students’ English language proficiency throughout their degree programs.
