What are the strengths of this practice?: 

Provides transition support. This work has multiple aspects and includes an intensive program at the beginning of semester, support for students within a subject for credit, an early diagnostic based on the MASUS (Measuring the Academic Skill of University Students). It has been reviewed and improved over time in response to student and staff feedback.

What improvements (if any) would you like to make?: 

We are planning an extension of the first transition intensive workshop program. This extension will support students enrolled in their first year and link with the assignment tasks required in another subject for credit in which they are enrolled.

What approaches/theories of language and/or learning underpin this practice?: 

Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) - informs the development of the program and its teaching and learning resources but it is not taught as an SFL subject. An adaptation of the MASUS is used as a pre-entry diagnostic
